Artenara is the highest and one of the oldest villages on the island. Here you can find caves that were inhabited in prehistoric times. You can even find some houses still carved out of rocks or caves. In the village there is an ethnographic museum where you can learn all about the history of the area.

Also be sure to visit the cave church La Ermita de la Cuevita. Here you will find the statue of the Virgen de la Cuevita, the Virgin Mary. On Aug. 15 each year, a great feast is given in honor of this saint.

Nice to know:

  • The village is located at an altitude of 1270 m.
  • The village is surrounded by huge native pine forests.
